What Is The Diver Stress & Rescue Course

The SSI Diver Stress & Rescue course teaches you how to recognize stress in yourself and other divers, prevent problems and respond to common diving emergencies.

Through pool and open-water training, you will practise rescue techniques in realistic but controlled situations and develop greater confidence in handling diving emergencies.

The goal is not simply to learn what to do in an emergency, but to understand how to recognise problems early and to stay calm in these situations.

What Will You Learn

During the SSI Diver Stress & Rescue course, you will learn and practise:

  • Stress recognition: Recognising signs of stress in yourself and other divers.

  • Incident prevention: Identifying and addressing problems before they develop into emergencies.

  • Self-rescue: Using effective techniques to manage problems and keep yourself safe underwater.

  • Emergency procedures: Using appropriate emergency procedures and rescue equipment in different situations

  • Tired diver tow: Assist a diver who is tired at the surface.

  • Cramp removal: Relieving leg cramps for yourself or another divers.

  • Air sharing & out-of-air: Practicing air-sharing and ascents.

  • Panicked diver scenario: Calming and rescuing a panicked diver underwater and at the surface.

  • Unresponsive (unconscious) diver underwater: Practising how to locate an unresponsive diver at depth, control buoyancy, and safely bring them to the surface.

  • Search and recovery: Locating a missing diver using appropriate search techniques.

  • Surface rescue and rescue breathing: Towing an unresponsive diver to the boat or shore while providing in-water rescue breaths.

The course combines theory with practical training so you can apply these skills in realistic diving situations.
